The most common costume for the Haka is the Piupiu skirts made of Harakeke or flax skirts.

In order to get the black and white color changes in the Piupiu skirts the Maori people strip the Harakeke in striped sections and then bury the plant for up to months at a time to get the desired dark look.
The main accessory associated with a different type of Haka mainly performed by the women is the Poi. A Poi is a ball made of plastic grocery sacks tethered to a rope for decorative and choreographic swinging.
